It Pays to Consider a Modern Furniture Design

Living room – Your living room makes up your social room and should serve as your signature room. By investing in a great hardwood framed sectional or coordinating sofa seating and chair set, you have addressed one of the biggest, highly utilized and most expensive basic requirements in your modern living room environment.

Bedroom – For the most cost effective option, the modern platform bed made of solid woods makes sense as contemporary statement bed. Since you spend the greater part of your life in this bed it is clever to purchase the best mattress which fits your budget. With unassuming modern platform beds you can can dispense with the additional cost requirement of a spring box and channel the savings instead to the bedroom furniture. Clean designs are imperative to a modern bedroom decor. Since this room is the easiest to clutter, make a point to have proper storage, since modern design is about proper spacing and well organized lifestyles.

Dining room – The crisp and neat modern dining room should always be very simplified, uncluttered and coordinating yet never cold or unappealing. When purchasing modern dining room chairs always remember that the chair may well be our most abused piece of furniture. Be sure that your modern chair is properly crafted in terms of pieces connection and then well constructed from durable resources like high gauge steel, solid wood or plastics. Insuring that the joints are joined together with high quality glues and hardware will help you incur future savings.

Bar – If you can begin in only one area, the modern contemporary bar furnishings are one of the incorporated in with almost any other decor design. From full bars to simple wine butlers for smaller spaces, you can come up with a properly designed personal bar.

Something New – Modern Furniture That Exudes Old World Luxury

It’s been said a number of times “Modern furniture is very chic, but it’s too cold and antiseptic-looking for my taste.”

I’ve always begged to differ.

Modern furniture is incredibly earthy — beds are slung low to the ground, and cabinets, sofas and hardware placement always follow gorgeous horizontal lines that are reminiscent of the horizon or the line of the ocean when one tries to see as far as the eye can see.

Modern furniture is often eye-poppingly expensive so it is important that one assess them with a studied and careful eye before making a purchase. And realistically, only very few of us can start out with a brand-new modern home such as those that exist in the pages of Dwell Magazine.

Careful observation and thought will allow you to mix modern furniture harmoniously with your existing style home or with your existing decor. Always keep in mind:
(1) scale and proportion (i.e. make sure your choices are in scale/harmonious in size with each other),
(2) materials (i.e. picking materials that effuses the same personality), and
(3). Always Balance!

You can try bedroom furniture line which exudes Italian style with minimum of minimalism and a maximum of luxury materials like the Rossetto furniture line. Try to look for designs that use a mix of materials that allows modern pieces to fit in transitional interiors.

For example, there are case goods that are more organic or feminine than the usual modern case goods, featuring curvaceous oval shilouettes and dark wenge wood veneers, but the materials used make the line a lot more accessible to transitional interior schemes.

A perfect foil to a modern interior is a platform leather bed. Some even have a gorgeous quilted design that is earthy, organic and feminine all at once.

Hankering for a bit of old-world luxury? Still think modern design is too cold and antiseptic? Check out the Rossetto Diamond Black lacquer nightstand with faux crocodile leather and Swarovski crystal insets. You’ll see “modern furniture” in a whole new light.

Here’s the lesson again: Want to incorporate modern furniture elements into your design scheme but are afraid it won’t “match?”

Pay attention to scale, materials and balance and you’ll be able to create rooms and vignettes that express your lifestyle and bring comfort and joy to your home life every day.

Remember, “adding comfort and joy to your home life every day” is what home and furniture design is all about, so why don’t you give it a try!

Quality Furniture: Buying Lounge and Fine Bedroom Furniture

The benefits of quality furniture such as fine bedroom furniture and lounge furniture lie not only in its durability, but also in the way people perceive you when they visit your home. You may have done it yourself when visiting: looked at the furniture and drew an opinion on your hosts according to their choice.

Your furniture states who you are and how you live, although, while choosing quality furniture can enhance your status, that is not the main benefit of purchasing it. The craftsmanship of a high quality suite covered with leather is not just in the leather, but primarily in the way the structure of each piece is crafted and put together – the leather is only the cosmetic coating on the quality framework.

Quality Furniture is Built to Last

Quality furniture is built to last. Notwithstanding that, fine bedroom furniture, or any type of high quality furniture in fact, can be damaged just the same as any laminated flat-pack furniture – and sometimes they are even easier to mark.

Most people believe that chain stores will sell them quality furniture, but that is not necessarily so. Generally, the old saying that you get what you pay for is true, and a fair number of these stores will also sell laminated particle board and plywood pieces at economic prices. For genuine quality furniture such as fine bedroom furniture crafted from solid wood, you must buy from a craftsman.

Quality Furniture Stores

There are several stores that will sell you genuine quality living room furniture, and fine bedroom furniture made from solid hardwood, such as oak or teak, or with a hardwood base but a beautiful walnut veneer. Rosewood is another beautiful wood, as are maple and the beautiful deep red mahogany. Some prefer pine which is softwood with a clean, fresh natural look, and while not as resistant to damage as hardwood, many prefer it for kitchen and bedroom furniture.

Search for manufacturers such as Stickley Furniture, American Craftsman, Sherrill furniture, The Custom Shoppe and Southwood furniture or any of a number if similar firms that you can find online, and you can be sure of purchasing high quality furniture that will last as long as you will. You should never be in a situation where you think a piece of furniture looks high quality, but are wondering whether or not it is in fact just chipboard, particle board or plywood with a glued veneer or laminate. If reputable firms such as those above offer that, you will be informed of the veneer and the base wood – no attempts to trick you!

An online search of what is available on the internet is an excellent way of finding good quality custom furniture. Look for fine furniture manufacturers, or companies that distribute their work. You will not find high quality furniture in flat-pack format. When you purchase fine bedroom furniture, each piece will be delivered in its correct form and not put together in your home with screws and plugs, many of which might be missing!

Real Wood Shows its Quality

You can tell real wood from its smell, its feel and the glow that only comes from well oiled or waxed hardwood. Leather has its own feel and smell, although it’s not so much the leather that counts, but its quality. Many types of leather are so thin that you can easily stick your fingers through them – and don’t believe anybody that sells you furniture saying that it cannot be damaged.

Fine furniture can be damaged – it can be knocked, scraped, stained and scratched just the same as any other furniture. If somebody tells you that this table will resist all knocks and scratches then they are either being economical with the truth (lying) or trying to sell you a synthetic utilitarian piece. Genuine wood is vulnerable. Only thermosetting resins can resist knocks and scratches.

The same considerations are true whether you are purchasing furniture from Chicago, Miami or from furniture stores in Atlanta. Atlanta furniture stores are just as likely to sell you cheap lounge furniture as stores in Chicago. How can you tell? How do you know if you are buying a genuine hardwood dining table or one made from particleboard and cheap veneer?

How to Identify Genuine Fine Furniture

First check the legs. No cabinet maker would ever fashion a fabulous table from solid mahogany and then put some screw-on legs under it! The legs will also be solid – and made from the same wood as the table is built from. Check beneath the table: all cheap mass-producers will veneer the top of the table but not the underside.

If the wood at the bottom and the top look different, then you are being conned. Check the joints: high quality furniture should be made using proper joints: mortise and tenon for rails and dovetail joints for drawers and cabinet sides – absolutely not using commercial plastic joining pieces or metal or plastic corner joints, and certainly not just screwed or nailed together.

Lift a chair upside down and examine it: high quality chairs will have a canvas on the bottom, or at the very least proper webbing and springs on the seats to offer support and comfort. Cheap furniture will have a plywood base and a slab of foam!

Quality furniture, whether in the form of fine living bedroom furniture or quality living room furniture, can make an ordinary room look good and raise your esteem in the eyes of your visitors.

Learn how to distinguish between the mass-production furniture stores and the quality furniture manufacturers such as Stickley, Southwood, American Craftsman and Sherrill.

It is important that you are sure of what you are purchasing when you buy Quality Furniture in Atlanta. A wide selection of fine bedroom furniture is available from Furniture Stores in Atlanta including Patterson Furniture.

Contemporary and Traditional Chinese Furniture – What to Expect

Contemporary Chinese furniture is simple and graceful in design with sleek, clean lines and elegant proportions. Chinese furniture has risen in popularity in the west because its subtle sophistication and timeless designs fit perfectly in either traditional or contemporary style homes.

With contemporary Chinese furniture, even small pieces are not only beautiful to look at but are highly functional. In many homes with space at a premium, contemporary Chinese furniture can serve a dual purpose, such as a wooden trunk which can double up as a side table with storage.

Traditional Chinese furniture designs and antique Chinese furniture can be highly ornate with exquisite craftsmanship. Some have elaborate woodcarvings or are painted with colourful scenes of rural life, ancient battles, dragon myths or mountain top monasteries.

A room decorated in a Chinese style should be kept simple and uncluttered to bring peace, harmony and balance to the space. Colours typically used in Chinese furniture include bold red, black and flashes of gold. Traditional influences such as robust shiny lacquered surfaces, stressed edging and brass hinges and handles can also been found in contemporary style furniture.

Chinese style designs are simple, attractive and timeless. Whether you choose to decorate your home in a contemporary Chinese or traditional style, Chinese furniture makes a bold statement. With each piece a work of art in its own right, Chinese furniture is a wonderful way to show off your creativity and give added wow factor to your home.

Black Lacquered Furniture

Black lacquered furniture designs have a classic, yet contemporary look, which suits all types of homes from traditional to more modern. Oriental black lacquered furniture is created by painstakingly sealing the wood in several thin layers of high gloss varnish resulting in a robust and gleaming finish, which can withstand the rigours of everyday household use.

With black lacquered furniture, the chosen wood such as pine or solid ash is lacquered seven times to produce the unmistakable black lacquered furniture of the Orient. Many designs today feature antiquated yet contemporary brass handles and wooden edging detail so you can choose just how contemporary or traditional you want your black lacquered furniture to be. From coffee tables, to console and dressing tables, dining tables, TV display units and sideboards, black lacquered furniture is available in all sizes and styles to suit every room in the home.

Origins of Black Lacquer Furniture

Oriental black lacquered furniture was commonly found in the temples and palaces and homes of the wealthy upper classes. Four basic styles of lacquered furniture design were used throughout the Ming and Qing Dynasties which lasted from 1368 – 1911. These styles included carving the lacquer, using black lacquer to fill in a design engraved into the wood and rubbing it flat, outlining the black lacquer and inlaying mother-of-pearl into the lacquer.

White Lacquered Furniture

White lacquered furniture can be made from a variety of woods, such as reclaimed pine, which is hand finished with a gleaming white lacquer finish. White lacquered furniture has a fresh, clean, contemporary look, and includes beds, side tables, coffee tables, trunks, console tables, mirrors and large sideboards all elegantly hand brushed in a linen finish. This style of furniture has increased in popularity in recent times and can come with attractive and elegant features such as antiquated yet contemporary brass flip up handles and sanded edges which subtly reveal the warm waxed wood underneath.

White lacquer furniture in particular has a lovely calm and tranquil feel which is perfect for the bedroom. Think of your bedroom with a double bed, chest of drawers, night stands and a wardrobe, all with a peaceful white finish, with details such as rectangular brass handles and stressed edging. White bedroom furniture can be accessorised by colourful artwork or bed throws. Crisp white living room furniture too can be enhanced by rugs, paintings or vases containing large flower displays to add a burst of colour.

This style of furniture works wonderfully in large airy spaces with bold or natural wall coverings and decorative lighting. It also works well in smaller rooms too. Here elegant white furniture can create a sense of increased space and light, in comparison to dark furniture which can tend to make a room feel smaller.

Whether you choose to contrast your lighter decor with the bold, clean lines of traditional Chinese-style black lacquered furniture, or prefer to off-set bold artwork or decoration with the more subtle linen white tones, Chinese furniture will really enhance your home. By choosing lacquered furniture you can create a wonderful environment where you can relax and enjoy the beauty of your interior design efforts for years to come.

Traditional Chinese Furniture

Traditional Chinese furniture demonstrates superb craftsmanship developed over centuries. Lacquer is prominent in traditional Chinese furniture with wood treated to a dark brown or shiny black finish and with hand carved or painted scenery, gold leaf overlay or mother of pearl inlays. Colours used are varied but include red which represents good luck and happiness and yellow or gold which represents health and long life.

The peak of Chinese traditional furniture manufacture was the period between the Ming and Qing dynasties. Ming furniture represented simple structure, wonderful craftsmanship and minimal decoration which revealed the natural beauty of the wood. Qing furniture was larger in size and elaborate engravings were popular. Handcrafted traditional Chinese furniture makes a fascinating centre-piece for your home. From wedding cabinets to decorative chests, ornamental stools, two door storage cabinets, side tables and oriental screens, Chinese furniture makes a wonderful addition to any setting and is a work of art in its own right.

Modernism in Modern Furniture

The Oxford University Press defines modernism as “a style or movement in the arts that aims to depart significantly from classical and traditional forms.” A more pragmatic view might be that modernism is a revolution against the conservative values of realism. From an architectural point of view, modernism evolved as a means of disposal for traditional design in favour of methods more technologically current. The ironic part is that modernism really found its voice during the later part of the 19th century and continues today – what we often refer to as ‘modern day’. What is considered the modern style of design, really refers to the word ‘modern’ as a noun, not an adjective. Whichever set of words best describes the meaning of modernism for each person, it all comes down to one basic concept: simple versus ornate.

Even the most ancient examples of furniture are ordained with some sort of decoration. Something the craftsman used as means of beautifying what he thought was plain, even mundane. Sure, tables and stools were originally created out of a need, but the innate human need for expression also had its influence. Religious altars became taller, bore carved images and even depicted stories of bravery. As the centuries rolled by and new materials were discovered, furnishing became more colourful. Fabrics were woven and dyed; metal was fashioned into nails and other hardware. As the perceived needs of the average person changed, so did their surroundings. Items in homes became a way of showing wealth and superior taste. The bigger and more ornate, the better. The Italian Renaissance is a classic example of this piece of design history. Large intricate scrolls painted with gold leaf were the staple of Italian design. Dark woods, chubby winged infants and voluptuous woman were everywhere. The longer the piece took to make, the more value was placed on it. Furnishing were no longer created out of necessity, they were made for ornamentation.

The Industrial Revolution of the 18th and 19th century brought a multitude of manufacturing evolutions to industry. There is no doubt these innovations were a necessary part of the world’s history, but many historians argue that modernism was a response to the spoils of the Industrial Revolution. Industry grew quickly during the 19th century, too quickly. Many thousands of people perished from the hardships of unchecked labour and poverty, yet demand stayed high. Purists of the modernist movement counter that argument with the fact that technology was the driving force behind new designs. Either way, the turn of the 19th century into the 20th definitely brought what had previously been regarded as a fleeting fad of the avant garde to a full fledged modernistic movement.

The most iconic piece of modern furniture is the Wassily Chair, designed by Marcel Breuer in 1925. It is a simple square frame of chrome tubular steel, lashed with straps of black leather for the seat and back. At the time, the Wassily was seen as an impossibly functional chair of wafer thin leather. It was in such stark contrast to what everyone had in their homes, that you either loved it or hated it. Obviously, more loved it than hated it, because the Wassily is still one of the most popular design pieces sold today. The Eileen Gray side table is another iconic piece of modern furniture that emerged at the beginning of the 20th century. It also makes use of tubular chrome steal, but in a circular fashion. An incomplete circle is the table’s footing, with a single piece of chrome steel rising up to hold a full circle of chrome and glass as the table’s surface. It is simple, understated and supremely modernistic. Many other tables of varying sizes and functions have used elements of Eileen Gray’s original design, but her side table will always be a part of the history of modern furniture.

The 1960′s brought a new flair to modern furniture. Designs began to incorporate subtle elements of tradition, such as the use of dark woods. The lines were still light and clean, but the way in which some of the materials were finished or upholstered felt different. In reality, these slight changes ended up appealing to a much wider market than just those interested in modernism. Consumers who felt alienated by what they perceived as odd-looking found colours and textures that appealed to their traditional tastes, but with a modern twist. Some design historians have called it post-modernism; others termed it as modern classic. Whichever label it bears, the fundamental elements of modern furniture stay in place. Perhaps it is the very absence of adornment that keeps modern furniture so ageless. So far it has survived 100 years of fads, technological advancements, ecological changes, global economic upheavals and political transformations. It appeals to those with a budget, and those who wish to have a cutting edge image in their home environment. It may be an oxymoron, but modernism is timeless.

Finding Discount Furniture and Furniture Clearance Offers

Finding discount furniture is always worthwhile, particularly when available as furniture clearance offers when the furniture is in perfect condition. Sure, you can find furniture sales anywhere where the pieces are damaged or are single parts of what were once sets. It’s not very often you will find a clearance furniture sale when every single item is perfect condition and sets are complete. How can firms offer such high quality products at low quality prices?

Here are just a few of the reasons for top furniture stores offering discount furniture to you at such low prices.

1. Furniture Clearance of Slow-Moving Stock

Sometimes certain lines do not sell well and it is considered better to sell the stock at a reduced price than to use it for firewood! If an item has been in stock for over a year or more, then the furniture store might decide that it is time for it to make way for newer and more popular designs.

Initially, such items will be given a prominent place in the showroom and sales staff will be instructed to actively promote it. However, if it fails to sell even then, the item or items will then be put on sale at discount furniture prices and sold as a furniture clearance offer. There is nothing wrong with the quality of the furniture: there are no dents or scratches, but it simply appears not to appeal to the patrons of that particular store.

2. Making Way for New Stock

It is not unusual for a new line of furniture to come in, and the store has to sell off the old versions to make way for the new. You get this in sports stores, car showrooms and other retail outlets where products are subject to progressive updating and the previous models have to be sold off to make way for the next generation.

This can also happen with furniture, and in such cases furniture clearance sales offer the opportunity for high quality home furniture to be available at highly discounted prices. ’50% OFF’ is not an unusual ticket to see, and some furniture clearance sales offer even better discounts than that.

The reason is that the old stock must go, and if it is not sold before the new deliveries come in then what does the store do? There are not many options, so you can find some amazing discount furniture prices available if you are lucky enough to be in the right store at the right time.

3. Display Discount Furniture Sales

While you might not find the bulk sales that you could with old stock replacement as describe above, you may be lucky and be in the store when clearance furniture prices are available for pieces that have been used on display. These are generally sold ‘as seen’, meaning that the store is not oblige to point out any scratches, dents or other damage. You purchase the furniture at a low price and assume responsibility for any problems associate with it.

This is fair enough, because ex-display items could be anything from perfect to badly scratched – what do you expect from furniture available to the public to try out and handle! However, the low prices of such discount furniture usually make it well worth while buying. Just think of it: brand new furniture is likely to be just as damaged after a month in your home as if you purchased it at only 40% of the regular price in a furniture clearance sale.

4. Special Purchase Sales

Furniture outlets sometimes get the opportunity to make special purchases of furniture such as recliners, sectionals and sofas that are not their own old stock, but older stock of the manufacturers. When furniture manufacturers decide to design and market new ranges of recliners or sectionals, for example, they cannot continue to also offer the previous range.

Just like the 2010 design of a specific automobile cannot be sold alongside the new 2013 model that takes it place, the older versions of a specific line of furniture have to be sold off quickly by a manufacturer when they design and launch their new range.

Such stock is offered to specific furniture outlets at knock-down prices to enable them to pass it on to their regular customers at discount furniture prices. Whole ranges of furniture of many different types can sometimes be made available in furniture clearance offers. It is sometimes possible to furnish an entire room at a fraction of the normal cost.

Finding discount furniture is not particularly difficult if you know where to look for it. Such furniture is of high quality and blemish free – the fact that a piece is offered at a furniture clearance price does not infer that it is substandard or that there is anything at all wrong with it. Take such offers when they are available because you may never find such great prices for high quality furniture again.

There is a large selection of discount furniture in Atlanta if you know where to look. The Woodstock Furniture Outlet offers a wide range of Atlanta furniture clearance offers at extremely low prices.
